Project Overview

BuildSMART (Building Supply chain Material Analysis and Risk Trade-off Tool) is an ESTCP-funded research prototype developed by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) in collaboration with the University of Pittsburgh and UC Davis. The project aims to help military facility planners, public works professionals, and acquisition staff explore estimated material demand and state-level supply and demand projections for construction projects.

Research Team

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL): Principal investigator and lead development. University of Pittsburgh: Building archetypes and material specifications. UC Davis: Cement and supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) supply chain analysis.

Current prototype scope

This working prototype explores material demand estimation and supply chain availability projections. Building quantities use archetype intensities and entered floor area; concrete breakdowns use regional NRMCA ratios. These are modeled planning estimates, not measured project quantities or supplier mix designs. Missing source values remain unavailable.

Optional mock mode previews costs, custom supply scenarios, substitutions and project risk comparisons using illustrative assumptions. Those views and their exports are labeled MOCK DATA. Their illustrative assumptions are not empirical data or calibrated planning estimates.

Funding and Support

This research is supported by the Environmental Security Technology Certification Program (ESTCP), U.S. Department of Defense, and the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science.
